DigiPen Institute of Technology Singapore was pleased to welcome Iñaki Rueda, Race Strategist for Lotus F1 Team.
During a special presentation for students and guests, Rueda explained how simulation software has become an essential tool to manage the team’s strategy during a Formula One race. In particular, Rueda offered a demonstration of Alpine, a data analytics platform created by DigiPen’s very own Research and Development team.
Since 2008, DigiPen’s custom software has contributed to more than 40 podium titles, including Lotus F1 Team’s 2013 victory at the Australian Grand Prix season opener. “In modern Formula One, race engineers and strategist have access to a vast amount of data, but this information would be useless without the ability to process it in real time,” Rueda said. “DigiPen has been able to develop a platform that can be adapted to our growing needs and empowers us to make split-second decisions.”

Samir Abou Samra, DigiPen’s Chief Technology Officer and head of the project development team, spoke briefly about how his team worked to create and improve upon the Alpine platform, along with Chris Comair, lead designer for DigPen Research and Development.
“For many years, DigiPen has become globally recognized as an academic institution that helps students become innovators in the video game and entertainment industries,” Abou Samra said. “This is true. But in reality, there are so many other industries that rely on the type of computer science and software development skills we teach at DigiPen. Our partnership with Lotus F1 Team demonstrates just one example.”
